Visa renewal fees and dates (from 1 Oct 2026)
From 1 October 2026 the fee to extend or change your status of residence depends on the period of stay you are granted — from ¥10,000 up to ¥75,000. Permanent residence is ¥200,000.

The fee is set by the period you are GRANTED, not the one you ask for. If unsure, check the range below.
When can I apply to renew?
- If your period of stay is 6 months or more, you can apply from 3 months before it ends.
- If it is 3 months or less, you can apply after about half of it has passed.
- Immigration asks you to apply by 45 days before your period ends if you want the result within your period.
- If you applied in time and the result has not come, you may stay until the result or until 2 months after your period ends, whichever is earlier (special period). This does not apply to periods of stay of 30 days or less.

Good to know
- Applications received by 30 September 2026 pay the old fee (¥6,000, or ¥5,500 online), even if the permission is granted after 1 October.
- Online fees are paid by convenience store or bank (Pay-easy / internet banking) only, plus a payment fee of ¥330 or ¥550 (¥220 for re-entry permits and the employment certificate). Credit cards and QR payments are not accepted.
- If you also receive a Specified Residence Card (combined with My Number Card), ¥1,900 or ¥2,600 may be added.
- People in severe financial hardship may get the fee reduced (to ¥10,000; permanent residence to ¥20,000). The reduction is not available for online applications.
- Permission for activity outside your status of residence is free.
