Pension lump-sum withdrawal calculator

If you paid into Japan's pension for 6 months or more and leave Japan, you can get part of it back as a Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment (脱退一時金). Up to 60 months are counted.

National Pension (self-employed, students, unemployed)

Employees' Pension (company employees)

Your "standard monthly remuneration" is close to your monthly pay including allowances (max ¥650,000). It is on your payslip or pension record (ねんきん定期便).

Before you claim

Getting the 20.42% tax back

  1. Only the Employees' Pension part is taxed (20.42% withheld). The National Pension part is not.
  2. Before you leave Japan, appoint a tax agent (納税管理人, anyone living in Japan) and file the notification at the tax office of your last address.
  3. After you receive the payment, send the payment notice to your agent. From 1 January of the next year, they file a "Tax Return for Refund Due to Taxation on Retirement Income at the Taxpayer's Option".
  4. If you had no other retirement allowance in the same year, the whole withheld tax is usually refunded (as in the National Tax Agency's example).

How to claim

  1. Use the Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment Claim Form (one form for both pensions, available in 14 languages).
  2. Send it by post to the Japan Pension Service, or apply online through e-Gov. You can send it before you leave if it arrives after your moving-out date.
  3. Attach a copy of your passport, proof of your bank account (a Japan Post Bank account cannot receive it) and your Basic Pension Number.
  4. Payment arrives about 4 months after the form is received.
